A few months ago, I received an email from Mary Beth Rebedeau from the Green Parents Network inviting me to a Green Bloggers Mini Conference. The mini conference was held in conjunction with the Green Family Festival which took place the same weekend. I immediately accepted the invitation and looked forward to the event and meeting other green bloggers. The mini conference began with the Duggan Sisters. I had never heard of them before but was immediately drawn in when I heard they make a safe deodorant. A few months ago I bought a deodorant stone and was extremely impressed with how well it worked! I didn’t stink! I found a miracle deodorant! And then, word started spreading that the crystals contained aluminum. I was totally bummed and didn’t know what to do (for the record, the debate on the stones are still causing me confusion). I’ve tried a number of “natural” deodorants over the past few years and none have worked. Some are quite expensive and I got tired of wasting my money so I was back to using Mitchum (YUCK!). I know it’s not good for me, but being a stinky gal isn’t ideal so I was in a bit of a funk.
The Duggan Sisters explained that it’s the chemicals in deodorants that stain our clothes- not the sweat, like I was led on to believe for so many years. I was intrigued by every word they said and their personal stories are extremely fascinating. I received a sample pack which contained a bar of soap, stink stick, and life stinks deodorant. The Duggan Sisters even explained that the bag the items were in is compostable and the ribbon is recyclable- how cool is that?! I debated on when would be the best time to try the deodorant because I didn’t want to experience what had happened in the past: I try a new deodorant and end up being a stinky gal by the end of the day. I decided that it’s never a good time to be the stinky gal so I had to just go for it. I used the soap in the shower and then to be safe, I used both the stick and powder. I attended a #Phonatics dinner that evening and upon sitting down at the restaurant I stated to my tablemates that maybe I shouldn’t have tried out a natural deodorant today- it was HOT HOT HOT in the restaurant! To top it off, I ordered a bowl of vegetarian pho and began to sweat. Oh no, I’m gonna stink!!! I waited and waited for the stink to come but it never did!!! I’ve been using the deodorant for about a month now and it does the job! I work out every morning before I shower and I tested out not reapplying the deodorant to see if I’d stink, and guess what?I don’t stink!!
I cannot stress to you enough how important it is to use the right products on your body. Taking care of your body, like living a sustainable life, is not just about doing one thing. It’s all encompassing. Examine what you’re putting on your skin and what effects it has on you. A natural deodorant isn’t going to do any good if you’re not using a quality, effective soap (The Duggan Sisters stressed this point). The Duggan Sisters make quality products that are both effective and natural. For more information on the Duggan Sisters or to order any of their great products, visit duggansisters.com.
